MID certification for reliable energy measurements.
At Xemex, we stand for accuracy and trust. We want to show our customers that we comply with all legal requirements, which is why we are proud of our MID certification. But what does that actually mean? In simple terms: MID is a kind of ‘quality mark’ for measuring instruments in Europe. It shows that a meter measures reliably and meets European standards for energy consumption and billing.
What is the MID Directive?
MID stands for Measuring Instruments Directive, the European directive for measuring instruments. It is an EU regulation that sets uniform requirements for measuring devices used for trade and billing purposes within the European Union. This includes water, gas, and electricity meters.
MID certification ensures that a meter is accurate, reliable, and legally valid. With a MID-certified meter, you can safely use energy measurements for official calculations such as billing or settlements.

Why MID Certification Matters
Measuring instruments like kWh meters must meet strict requirements for accuracy, repeatability, and reliability. Only meters assessed under the MID by a recognized certification body can be sold and used for legal billing purposes throughout the EU.
MID certification also guarantees compliance with European standards such as the EN 50470 series, which define the accuracy and technical performance of electricity meters.
What MID Means for Xemex
At Xemex, we take quality and compliance seriously. That’s why our MID-certified kWh meters, such as the Smart kWhiq 1-phase meter, are designed and tested according to the strict requirements of the MID directive.
This means that:
- You get reliable energy measurements that meet European metrology standards.
- The measurement data is legally valid for billing, settlements, or other commercial applications.
- You have confidence and control over how energy consumption is recorded and used — not only for internal reports but also for audits and market compliance.
MID Marking and Recognition
MID-certified meters carry not only the CE mark, but also an additional metrology marking (“M” followed by the certification year and notification license number). This shows that the device has been assessed under the European directive and is legally recognized across Europe for billing purposes.
