Compact and Versatile Interface for Energy Measurement and Data Communication
The Xemex Smart P1 Connect dongle is a smart and compact conversion module (dongle) that makes real-time consumption data from a smart meter available via Modbus TCP. The dongle forms a robust bridge between digital energy meters and systems such as EV chargers that require energy management. This makes the dongle a smart add-on for your residential energy meter. Whether it concerns load balancing or monitoring, the dongle provides a reliable and flexible solution for both residential and professional applications.
Flexible Installation via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Direct Connection
The dongle supports multiple connection methods: via a fixed Ethernet connection, Wi-Fi, or a direct peer-to-peer connection with a charging station. This makes the device quick and easy to install in various situations without complex network configurations. Configuration is done intuitively via a built-in web interface accessible via mDNS, local IP address, or Wi-Fi hotspot.
Data Exchange via Modbus TCP and MQTT Integration
The dongle continuously reads smart meter data through the P1 port and converts it to Modbus TCP. This data can then be used by EV chargers, EMS systems, or other smart devices. Additionally, it is possible to connect the dongle via the built-in web interface to an MQTT broker of your choice.
For centralized applications, Xemex offers the possibility to use an integrated MQTT broker via the cloud-based ENNY platform (hosted in Europe). This combination enables advanced data integration and monitoring without the dongle needing to host a broker itself.
Status Software and Status LED
A four-color LED indicator clearly shows the status:
- Flashing red: starting up / no P1 data
- Flashing orange: no IP address
- Flashing green: network configuration required
- Solid green: everything is functioning correctly
Using the front button, you can quickly perform a new network scan or reset to factory settings by holding it for 1 second.
No Local Hosting, but Smart Software in Compact Hardware
The Smart P1 Connect dongle is a hardware and software solution in one compact module. The device itself does not host a broker or applications but acts as an intelligent translation layer between the smart meter and the network. Thanks to the built-in software, network settings, forwarding modes, and protocols can be easily managed without external software or gateways.
Support for Multiple Usage Scenarios
The Smart P1 Connect supports three usage scenarios:
- Connection to the local network via DHCP or static IP.
- Direct connection to an EV charger (peer-to-peer).
- Forwarding P1 data to other devices via the optional P1 output.
For DSMR 5.0 meters, the dongle receives new data every second; for DSMR 4.2, this is every 10 seconds. Thanks to advanced forwarding modes, the dongle can also function as an active or passive splitter, allowing multiple devices to use the data.
Splitter Function: Smart Data, Two Destinations at Once
The Smart P1 Connect Dongle is equipped with both a P1 input (left) and a P1 output (right). The output passes exactly the same data as received on the input—without delay or modification. This makes it possible to connect one smart meter simultaneously to multiple devices. For example, a HomeWizard P1 dongle can be connected to the output to visualize real-time consumption for the end user, while the EV charger receives the required measurement data via Modbus TCP for load balancing.

The Smart P1 Connect dongle makes smart meter data directly available via Modbus TCP or MQTT. As a user, this gives you accurate and up-to-date insights into your energy consumption. This information can be used, for example, for reporting, monitoring energy costs or for linking to dashboards in smart home or EMS solutions. - Controlling charging stations via P1 data
A common application is reading the P1 telegram from the smart meter and translating it into a control signal for an electric charging station. This allows automatic control of when and how much charging takes place based on current energy consumption – an essential function for load balancing and grid stability. - Control of batteries and micro-inverters
The dongle can also be used to make current consumption and feed-in data available for battery storage or PV systems with micro-inverters. By offering this data via Modbus TCP or MQTT, these systems can make optimal decisions about charging or discharging a home battery. - Network integration with various installation options
The Smart P1 Connect dongle can be connected to a local network via DHCP or a static IP address, directly connected to an EV charger (peer-to-peer), or pass data to a second device via the optional P1 output. This flexibility makes the solution suitable for both residential installations and business - Forwarding and P1-splitting
The dongle’s forwarding functions allow incoming P1 data to be forwarded to other devices in various ways. Think passive or active splitter scenarios, which also allow other devices – such as an energy manager or home automation system – to use the same P1 data.
