EMS and energy management: what is true and what is not?

April 30 was Honesty Day. And frankly… there are quite a few half-truths circulating about EMS (Energy Management Systems). It seems like everyone is suddenly shouting something about it. But what is really true, and what is more marketing than reality?

At Xemex, we believe that transparency is the basis of trust. That is why today – on this day that is all about honesty – we put the facts straight. What is true, and what is not

Full independence is possible

Some EMS providers cleverly link their system to a dynamic energy contract. Convenient at first glance, but often there is a revenue model behind it via tying. At Xemex, we work 100% independently: there is no “back door” to specific contracts or suppliers. You choose yourself. After all, it’s your energy, your choice and your control!

“Reliable” without a track record? Not really.

Calling reliability is easy. But in practice, it means: years of experience, a robust installed base and proven performance. Without that, it remains an empty promise.

❌ Cloud-only solutions don’t always work

Some EMS providers offer cloud-based systems only. Sounds modern, but local intelligence and control remain essential. Think direct control of devices in case of internet failure or fast response time in case of grid disturbances. A robust EMS always has local components too.

Golden mountains? Read the small print

Some suppliers promise hefty savings, but for that you have to use their vertical EMS. They then decide when you can use power, for example from your own solar panels. Convenient? Perhaps. But it also limits your freedom. Fair is fair: a good EMS should put your needs first, not the supplier’s.

EMS is not (yet) plug and play

A common misconception: that you can easily install an EMS yourself. The reality? A well-functioning system requires technical knowledge, good integrations and regular updates. For many installers and consumers alike, this is not self-evident.

Quality over quantity for integrations

Some suppliers display long lists of supported devices. We prefer to focus on what really works. Fewer links, but ones that work flawlessly – together with partners that are just as reliable.

📢 Fair is fair: not every household needs a full-fledged EMS now…

But the energy market is changing fast. And in some cases, an independent Energy Management System (EMS) is already smart – or even necessary.

👉 Do you have a dynamic energy contract? Then it pays to control consumption smartly based on current power prices.
👉 Are you considering a battery, heat pump or charging station? Then an EMS helps to control everything optimally.
👉 Is grid aggravation or a more expensive meter box looming? Smart energy use can prevent this.

⚖️ Honesty also means: it depends on your situation. Not every house, not every occupant will benefit directly from an EMS. But do you want to look ahead, become more sustainable and control costs? Then an independent EMS can make all the difference.

And yet… EMS is indeed the future

Energy demand is growing. More and more devices demand power, the grid is getting fuller, and sustainability is becoming more and more urgent. In this light, a good EMS is not only a luxury, but soon a pure necessity.

Do you want to be prepared? Then starting now with a fair, future-oriented EMS system is not a bad idea. Even if you start with boiler control, for instance, to move on to even more EMS later. No golden mountains, no empty promises, but a grip on your energy and ready for what’s to come.

And that… is just being honest.

Happy Day of Honesty!
